If you heard the phrase, “step aerobics,” what do you envision? If your answer is reminiscent of an 80’s workout videos complete with neon sweatbands and bright hair scrunchies, it’s time to expand your knowledge!
Step aerobics consists of various choreographed cardio “steps” combined into different aerobic routines set to music. In a step aerobics class, you’ll learn basic step routines that involve stepping on and off of a small, raised platform. As you progress, you can add height to your platform to increase the intensity of your workout.
This form of steady state cardio workout has lost some popularity since it ran its course after the 80s and 90s, it’s true. However, there are so many benefits to step aerobics that make it a worthwhile form of exercise, regardless of what the current workout trend may be!
See step aerobics for what it really is: a great way to “step up” your cardio and take advantage of great health benefits!
1. Lose weight.
While you may not think of something as simple as a low to moderate intensity cardio workout as a good way to lose those extra pounds, step aerobics can help you burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time. That translates to burning fat, and because step aerobics also helps to tone your muscles, it’s a great way to replace body fat with muscle!
2. Tone your quads and your glutes.
In fact, step aerobics frequently can tone more muscle groups than many of the more popular cardio workouts because step aerobics don’t focus on a single muscle group.
Instead, it provides a variety of movements that target many different muscle groups, from your legs and butt to your arms and core – all in one workout session!
3. Prevent and manage a variety of health problems.
Step aerobics has been shown to help prevent diabetes and to help manage arthritis. It also can prevent cardiovascular problems. Because step aerobics are a great way to get your heart pumping without causing undue strain, step aerobics can be a great form of cardio for those with high blood pressure and may even help prevent heart disease!
Just make sure to ask your doctor if you have a current health problem to make sure step aerobics is right for you! It may increase pain related to already severe joint problems.
4. Improve your mental health.
Like many aerobic workouts, step aerobics not only get your heart beating and your muscles working. It also helps your body to release endorphins, which help to boost your mood, reduce stress, and decrease anxiety.
5. Have fun and motivate yourself!
Step aerobics are an enjoyable way to add effective cardio into your life! Because step aerobics classes are put to music and have a definite rhythm to them, it’s much easier to motivate yourself to go – and even the best workout routines only work if you actually do them!
If this is making you reconsider your idea of step aerobics, my advice is to just try it!
